How to rank in Google Maps: a Google Business Profile guide for local businesses

When someone searches "near me", Google shows the map first. Here's how to set up and optimise your Google Business Profile so your shop, clinic, institute or office shows up there.

For a local business, the most valuable spot on Google isn't the first website result โ€” it's the map pack, the three businesses shown on a map above the regular results. That's where people searching "near me" look first, and it's controlled almost entirely by your Google Business Profile.

Step 1: Claim and verify your profile

Search for your business on Google Maps. If it already exists, claim it; if not, create it at business.google.com. Google will ask you to verify that you're the owner. Until verification is complete, your changes won't fully appear.

Step 2: Choose the right categories

Your primary category is one of the strongest ranking factors. Pick the most specific one that matches your main service โ€” "Computer training school" rather than just "School". Add secondary categories for your other services.

Step 3: Complete every field

  • Name: your real business name, without stuffing in keywords โ€” that can get your profile suspended.
  • Address and service area: exactly as written everywhere else online.
  • Phone and website: a number that's actually answered, and a link to the most relevant page.
  • Hours: including holiday hours. Wrong hours lose customers and trust.
  • Services or products: list each one with a short description.
  • Description: what you do, who you serve and which areas you cover.

Step 4: Add real photos

Profiles with genuine photos of the shopfront, interior, team and work get more clicks and calls. Add new photos regularly โ€” stock images don't build trust.

Step 5: Get reviews, and reply to all of them

Reviews influence both your ranking and whether people choose you. Ask happy customers directly โ€” a WhatsApp message with your review link right after a good experience works well. Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and specifically. Never buy fake reviews; Google removes them and can penalise the profile.

Step 6: Keep your details consistent everywhere

Your business name, address and phone number should be identical on your website, Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Facebook and every other directory. Inconsistent details confuse Google and weaken your ranking.

Step 7: Post updates regularly

Use Google Business Profile posts for offers, events and news. Regular activity signals that the business is open and active, and gives searchers another reason to call.

Step 8: Link it to a good website

Google also looks at your website when ranking your map listing. A site with clear service pages mentioning your town and area supports your profile. See why your website may not be showing on Google.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes, creating and managing a Google Business Profile is free.

How long does it take to rank in Google Maps?

A newly optimised profile often improves within a few weeks to two months, depending on competition in your area and how many reviews competitors have.

Can I add keywords to my business name?

No. Adding keywords that aren't part of your real business name breaks Google's guidelines and can get your profile suspended.

How do I get more Google reviews?

Ask satisfied customers directly, soon after a good experience, and send them your review link by WhatsApp or SMS. Make it easy and never offer payment for reviews.
