Java full stack developer in India (2026): roadmap, Spring Boot skills and salary

Java still runs Indian enterprise hiring — banks, insurers, GCCs and every large service company. Here's the Java full stack roadmap that matches those job descriptions, what it pays, and how it compares with MERN.

Every year someone announces that Java is finished, and every year it remains the largest single source of software jobs in India. Banks, insurers, telecom, global capability centres and the big service companies run on it, and they hire in volume.

If you want a job in an Indian enterprise rather than a startup, Java full stack is statistically the safest bet you can make. Here's the roadmap that matches what those job descriptions actually ask for — the same sequence as our Java Full Stack course.

What a Java full stack developer builds

Backend: REST APIs in Spring Boot, talking to a relational database through JPA/Hibernate, secured with Spring Security, tested with JUnit, deployed in a container. Frontend: React or Angular consuming those APIs. Around it: Maven or Gradle, Git, a CI pipeline and usually a cloud deployment.

The word "full stack" in an enterprise job description usually means backend-heavy. You'll spend most of your time in Spring Boot, and you need enough React or Angular to build and debug the screens that call your APIs.

Java developer salary in India: realistic ranges

  • Fresher (0–1 year): ₹3.5 – ₹6.5 LPA
  • 2–4 years: ₹7 – ₹14 LPA
  • 5–8 years: ₹15 – ₹28 LPA
  • Architect / lead: ₹28 – ₹50 LPA

Service companies start lower and raise slowly; product companies and GCCs start higher. The reliable accelerator in Java is depth — people who understand Spring internals, JVM behaviour under load and system design move up considerably faster than people who only wire annotations together.

The Java full stack roadmap, in order

  1. Weeks 1–3 — Core Java. Syntax, OOP done properly, collections, exceptions, generics, streams and lambdas. Start at our Java programming course if this is new.
  2. Week 4 — SQL and database design. Joins, indexes, normalisation, transactions. Enterprise Java is database work with extra steps.
  3. Week 5 — Build tools and Git. Maven or Gradle, project structure, branching and pull requests.
  4. Weeks 6–8 — Spring and Spring Boot. Dependency injection, REST controllers, JPA and Hibernate, validation, exception handling, profiles and configuration.
  5. Week 9 — Spring Security and JWT. Authentication, authorisation, roles, and the token flow every interview asks about.
  6. Week 10 — Testing. JUnit, Mockito, integration tests. Rare in fresher portfolios and immediately noticed.
  7. Weeks 11–12 — Frontend. HTML, CSS and JavaScript foundations, then React: components, state, routing, calling your own APIs.
  8. Week 13 — Microservices basics. Service boundaries, REST between services, config, discovery, and why not to start with microservices.
  9. Week 14 — Docker and deployment. Containerising the app, environment configuration, a cloud deploy, and a CI pipeline.
  10. Week 15 — Capstone and interview prep. One full application, plus DSA revision for placement rounds.

Projects that get Java freshers shortlisted

  • A banking or wallet application — accounts, transactions, transfers, statements. Enterprise interviewers love it because it forces you to handle transactions and consistency.
  • An e-commerce backend — catalogue, cart, orders, payments stub, role-based admin.
  • An employee or inventory management system — CRUD done well, with search, pagination, validation and audit fields.
  • A booking system — anything with availability and conflicts, which is genuinely harder than it looks.

For every project: real authentication, meaningful error responses, at least a few tests, a README, and a live deployment link. Four ordinary CRUD apps with none of that are worth less than one project with all of it.

Don't skip DSA if you're targeting placements

Java full stack skill gets you through the technical interview; data structures and algorithms get you into it. Most mass recruiters and every product company screen with a coding round first. Those employers also hire in volume and recruit heavily on campus, which makes Java the highest-probability choice if you want a first job outside the startup ecosystem.

Should I learn Java full stack or MERN full stack?

Match it to your target employer. Java full stack fits enterprises, service companies and campus recruiters; MERN fits startups, product companies and agencies. Java has a steeper start but a more structured ecosystem. If you have no strong preference and want maximum interview opportunities in India, Java is the safer default.

Do I need to know core Java before joining a full stack course?

Is Spring Boot enough, or do I need microservices too?

Spring Boot is the requirement; microservices are the bonus. Freshers are hired to work inside existing services, so a solid monolithic Spring Boot application with good structure, security and tests beats a half-finished microservices demo. Learn the microservices vocabulary so you can discuss it, and build depth in Spring Boot first.

Will I still need data structures and algorithms?

Yes, for the screening round. Most Indian recruiters, including service companies, run a coding test before any framework discussion. Keep a steady DSA practice habit running alongside your full stack learning rather than cramming it at the end — an hour a few times a week over the course is enough for most placement rounds.
